18 MILES! #2

24 September, 2006 14:00

Today was a good day. I ran 18.65 miles and I didn't feel exhausted afterwards. That's a first! My average pace was around 8:50mi/mile. I was hoping to finish under 9:00, and I'm quite happy. I was a little worried the day before because the weather forcasts said it would reach into the low-90s! Most of where I ran was covered by shade, so that was nice, and I think the hottest it got was about 80-85F. I chose the right course by running on steep hills (UCLA perimeter) first. There isn't much shade around UCLA, and so I'm glad it did it when it was cooler. Then I ran through Santa Monica and Brentwood. The only place that I'm feeling pain is at the base of my left ankle. The rest of my ankle doesn't hurt. It started hurting 16 miles in. There's been days where it doesn't hurt and days it does. I'm not sure if it's part of my shoe that's hitting into that area or perhaps impact on concrete has been hurting me. I've been running at a faster pace lately, and so that could be the cause. My quad was starting to be tight around 15.5 miles. Same area as where it got crampy during the L.A. marathon and the SRLA Friendship Run. I stretched a bit, and it felt better. 1 more 18 miler and 2 more 20 milers until Santa Clarita Marathon.

LA XXII tentative

Here's the tentative course for the upcoming L.A. marathon. It starts at Universal Studios and end in Downtown L.A. Distance is off as I didn't do a careful job with all the turns being tight. This is for you, Dave S.

18 MILES!

03 September, 2006 23:23

Today was a great run. Hilly, but I managed to finish 18 miles. I was a bit worry since I injured my right lower calf from too much running ... hehe ... oh the impact on concrete. It was fine with some stretching and icing in the end. The coming week is my recovery week. Haven't had one of those in almost three months now. What was great about today was that when I was running back on San Vicente to the Nike Club Run LA station, I felt rather good going up a slight incline. Later on it was tough with the hills on Sunset. James who is training for his first marathon, insists that I run the Santa Clarita marathon with him. At the moment I have ran more long distances than he has. He says he is going to pay for my registration fee if he doesn't injure himself til then. So if I end up running this marathon, I'm hoping to do one 18 miler and two 20 milers. I actually don't feel sore after 18 miles. I was pretty sore my last two 18 miles back in Feb/March. I guess these long runs (14+ miles) really help.
