Took a spin with Marc in the desert. He helped me ride this faster than I would have alone. Activity

This Route is Scott Holland's. I have blogged it here to share performance. It's got a hearty climb up front, smooths out with some sharp edges at the lake, than another climb (not as hearty) on the way back. Activity

Had a little accident. My first. A classic. Driver side door of parked car opened as I would pass. Sprained my wrist, banged my elbow, and broke the air stem to rear tire tube. Front rim was slightly out of whack. I fixed the tire and I was off. Poor Frank, his door is badly damaged. Activity

The day was perfect. An easy ride, no pushing, just riding. Spectacular inland and coastal views, couldn't help but stop and smell the flowers. Activity

I do not use the short route very much anymore. Only when it's late in the day, dark, and raining. Otherwise, it just feels like a waste of time getting ready for such a short ride. Instead, I have added a longer 16 mile route option to my regular commute, which makes this ride the medium route. I guess that's progress. Equipment changes. The stem extender has saved my back. The rear cassette replacement (12-24 to a 12-27) makes the steepest hills in San Diego just barely climbable, where they were impossible, which is perfect. Cycle computer. Added a Garmin (Edge) 305 cycle computer to the rig a few weeks back. It adds wireless cadence and heart monitoring with improved GPS tracking for charting. While the "Edge" is really no longer the cutting edge of cycle computer technology (see the Edge 705), it's proven tech that adds great value. The only thing missing is street maps. Sure, I looked at the very expensive 705, and I considered the cost difference between it, and my bike. In the end, I could not justify turning my bike into a mount for a GPS cycle computer. The 305 does everything I need, and you can get one with all the accessories for less that $150. Activity

This is the first time in a while I set out to just go fast. The Black Mountain climb on the second hill still frustrates me, even though it gets easier every week. I was hoping to get an average speed of 15mph, and some how managed to do better. Next time I'll have to move the bar up to 16. Activity

This one was hard. Most of the ride out is up hill. Particularly the last two and a half miles. I thought it would never end. In the middle of it, I considered never doing it again. Why in this gods world would anyone willingly put themselves through so much pain? It sure would have been nice to find an ice cream stand, or anything at the end. Nope, just the scrag of the hill country, with nothing to do but catch your breath, and turn home for a beer. Or so I thought. The trip home was a real blast. It might even make up for the difficult climb. 30 to 40 miles per/hour is really fast on the bicycle, and I literally could not contain my exuberance during the flight down. I sounded like a cowboy, whooping and hollering like a mad man. I can only imagine the thoughts of the other cyclists and motorists as they passed. So, I guess it was worth it. That's not to say I'll go out and do it again today, but, I'll do it again . . . Activity
This was crazy. GPS flipped out and returned some wild numbers. So, I mapped it manualy.
I do this one often. Of course, it requires another ride to get home. Overall, the route descends about 560' from my house, which makes for a more challenging trip back. While I'll probably never match my decent heading home, it would be cool, if some day in the future, I could match this one in particular. . . California dreaming . . . Activity

This ride seemed a bit easier than the last. It has a long tough climb from Del Mar beach to Torrie Pines. I managed the climb while staying in the saddle (39/25). Having trouble with the lower stem height. My back protested loudly. It was startling, so I gave it some Vicodin and went out and bought a Delta stem extender (thread-less 1-1/8, black), and a 12-27 cassette to replace the 12-25. More on how that works out later . . Still miss granny, need to raise handlebars. Bike feels better as I get more familiar. Poway, California
What a difference a day makes. Had to retire my old Panasonic (28" DX2000) after cracking a weld near the bottom bracket. Bought a used Leader (65cm 735R, w/mostly DuraAce comp). I miss the head height, and the granny ratios, otherwise, it's slammin. I underestimated the climes on the back half of this run through fairbanks and wish granny was with me, but I managed. Activity
Breaking in a new bike. Lost my granny gear and 3rd chainring. Hilly back section was tough. |
